Abbreviations

The abbreviation consists of representing, in a reduced form, certain words or expressions. It usually ends with an abbreviated period, which is the sign that indicates the word's reduction.

With the advancement of communications and the use of the internet, the pace at which changes occur in everyday life, in relation to everything, is very accelerated and, consequently, these changes reflect on communication, as there is a need for language to accompany this process. all dynamism. And from there, the abbreviations were built. They appear in chats, emails, messages, tickets.

Below are some commonly used examples:

People usually abbreviate words randomly anyway, as in the examples above. But, as a general rule, to make an abbreviation correctly, the first syllable must be placed together with the first letter of the second syllable, followed by the abbreviation period. For example:

  • Century – Century
  • Administrative – Adm.
  • Female – Female
  • Adjective – Adj.
  • Brazilian – Bras.

In addition to this rule, it is necessary to pay attention to the points below:

When the second syllable starts with two consonants, both are part of the abbreviation. Example:

  • Construction – build.
  • Road - str.

Accent: when on the first syllable, it must be preserved. Example:

  • century - century
  • number – no.
  • page – p.

End point: The abbreviation period has the end point value, too. So, if the abbreviation is at the end of the sentence, there is no need to put another period. Example:

The store sold blouses, coats, scarves, etc.

Abbreviation by contraction: when you eliminate the letters in the middle of the word. Example:

  • Bachelor – Bel.
  • Colonel - Cel.
  • Company – Co.
  • Limited - Ltd.

Some words do not follow the general rule, but are accepted by normative grammar, such as:

  • Paid – pg.
  • Box – cx.
  • Apartment – Apt.
  • Illustrious – Ilmo.
  • Teacher – Prof.
  • Before Christ – BC.
  • Verses – vv.

Another way to abbreviate words is through acronyms, they are formed by the initial letters and it is a type of word formation process, since it has its own meaning. Examples:

  • Corporation - SA
  • United States of America – USA
  • United Nations - UN
  • Amazonas - AM
  • Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics - IBGE
