The Gold Coast is a great city, both in population and perimeter. The Gold Coast is located on the east coast of Australia, in Queensland, north of Sydney. The Gold Coast, on the other hand, is just the “urban area”.

To the south of the Gold Coast you will find Coolangatta which is known for its lighthouse. Heading north, you’ll first reach Main Beach and Stradbroke Island. From Coolangatta to Stradbroke Island, there are plenty of resorts and beaches. The Gold Coast commercial center is the suburbs of Surfers Paradise and Southport. The Gold Coast ends in the north with the suburb of Coombabah.

Gold Coast and the hinterland region

West of the Gold Coast you will find the Lamington National Park which is on the World Heritage List and the area known as the Gold Coast hinterland. Tours are arranged here, whether for visiting the Tamborine Mountain Distillery or for hiking in a very special nature.

But today Surfers Paradise is so much more. It is also the tourists’ paradise. Surfers Paradise is the nightlife hub and shopping mecca of the Gold Coast. Here, the skyscrapers stretch to the sky, while people’s lives are buzzing almost all the time of day.

Surfers Paradise’s first skyscraper was erected in 1959. The house is called Kinkabool and is located on Hanlan Street and is 10 storeys. Since then, no one has looked down, and Surfers Paradise is today what Manhattan is for New York. Some of the most popular hotels in Surfers Paradise are in skyscrapers. We mention e.g. Q1, Soul and Hilton.

An attraction in Surfers Paradise is the “parking guards”! These ‘Surfing Paradise Meeter Maids’ are bikini-clad young girls who, instead of writing fines, spend more money on the P-machines. The whole thing is, of course, a stunt that gives the area good PR.

Is there a week you might want to steer clear of Surfers Paradise then it’s the weekend after high school students finish their final exam. Then count on nearly 50,000 (alcoholic) youths partying in the city. However, it should be said that the authorities are working hard on alcohol-free events on the beach.
