Standardized test acronyms

CAE

CAE is the acronym that refers to the Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) exam and certificate, suitable for those who need to prove high performance in the language, whether for work opportunities, study or obtaining visas and immigration programs. Your certification is at CEFR level C1 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)

CPE

CPE is the acronym that refers to the Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE) exam and certificate, the most advanced among the options aimed at the objective of studies. It is intended for those who have skills close to a fluent English user. His certificate is at C2 level – the highest in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

ACT

The ACT (or American College Testing) is a test that assesses a student's knowledge of English, math, reading, science and writing and is used by American universities in their admissions processes. In Brazil, a similar test is the ENEM

SAT

SAT stands for Scholastic Aptitude Test, or school aptitude test. It is one of the most common exams in the US, used by US universities in their undergraduate admissions process. It also resembles the Brazilian ENEM in the sense that it is standardized and used for entry into higher education.

TOEFL

The TOEFL, or “Test Of English as a Foreign Language”, is one of the most requested English language tests by universities and educational institutions in general. It is created and managed by a non-profit organization called ETS (which stands for Educational Testing Service).

IELTS

The acronym IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System, and designates an English test managed by a number of different organizations such as the British Council, the IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English. As a rule, IELTS is the test that is usually required by programs in the UK, Australia and other English-speaking countries outside of America. On the American continent, the TOEFL is generally required more.

GRE

GRE stands for “Graduate Record Examination”. The GRE is divided into three areas: verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and critical writing. This is a standardized exam, similar to the GMAT, which can be subject-specific – such as Biology, Mathematics or Literature – or General. For all cases, the test is performed by computer, in an application center. The application lasts for 4 hours in total.

GMAT

GMAT refers to the Graduate Management Admission Test. It is an admission test required by most business schools in the US and Europe. The test, however, does not assess specific business knowledge, but seeks what is often called “mental intelligence” and the ability to make decisions under time pressure.
