English abbreviations you should know

There are many English abbreviations to be aware of. Some of these abbreviations have been around for a long time, but many have only emerged in recent years. Abbreviations are very popular, especially for short messages via mobile phone: typing on the small screen is tedious, so it is better to take an abbreviation. And not just in English text messages or WhatsApps.

Here are some important English abbreviations with the German translation.

English abbreviations - especially when used on cell phones - are often created by sound.

For example:

2 in English means "two", but it also sounds like "too".

The 8 is also often used. 8 means "eight", with an L in front of it, "Leight" is "late".

The abbreviation 2L8 stands for "too late".

Otherwise, the first letters of the English words are often used:

LOL = laughing out loud

or

BFF = best friend forever

Some abbreviations in English also simply drop a few letters, mostly vowels and double consonants:

RLY = really

In this way you can derive many English abbreviations, even if you have never heard or seen them.

att. = attention = at hand (e.g. for letters)

B2B = Business to Business = from company to company

B2C = Business to Customer = from company to (private) customer

BBQ = barbecue = grill, grill party

BBS = Be back soon. = Soon / Back soon.

BFF = best friend forever = best friends forever

BRB = Be right back. = I'll be right back.

BTDT = Been there, done that. = I've experienced it too. / I've already tried it.

btw = By the way. = Übrigens.

CCTV = Closed Circuit Television = Videoüberwachung

CU = See you. = See you then. / See you later.

DIY = do-it-yourself. = Do it yourself (without a professional).

DOB = Date of Birth = birthday

GL = Good luck. = Good luck.

*g* = grin = Grins.

ETA = estimated time of arrival

F2F = face to face = personal

FTR = For the record. = So that's clear. / To record this.
