A college is an institution of higher education or part of a university institution . College is derived from the Latin collegium . In ancient Rome , a collegium was a club or association, a group of people who lived together, following a common set of rules. In English , the word college can also be used to refer to a high school, a school that offers post-secondary programs but is not part of higher education , or a vocational school that offers vocational certificates.
