By nature any person is able to abbreviate a word. The vast majority of writers use abbreviations, in order to compress the content of their book, but they always emphasize their meaning of said abbreviation, mentioning it through a glossary at the beginning or end of their book.

What is abbreviation for truncation?

The abbreviation by truncation refers to an elimination of letters, either in the final part of a word or to simplify the word in a reduced way, but always taking into account a period at the end. Usually some syllables or letters within the word are removed.

Truncation is a strict identity phenomenon for the strikethrough of some particular words. Among the most commonly used examples of abbreviated truncation today are:

  • (etc.)
  • (Avenida)
  • (Mr.)
  • (Doctor)

Deleting certain words helps a great deal to simplify the content and compress characters within a sentence, making it shorter but conveying the same meaning.

Is there another type of abbreviation?

Yes, they are actually two types of abbreviation that are most used when writing texts. The first that Truncation was already mentioned, and on the other hand there is Contraction, which refers to the abbreviation of a word by deleting central letters or vowels of the word. For example;

  • (Avenue)
  • (Number)

What is the difference of an abbreviation by truncation and contraction?

At first glance, its difference is that the truncation abbreviation is shorter, while the contraction abbreviation includes more letters in the abbreviation.

On the other hand, there are abbreviations that end with the letters one on top of the other, such as:

  • N ° (number)
  • C / u (unit cost)

It should be noted that if the word has a tilde, it can be abbreviated in the same way, such as the word page = page.

Finally, a recommendation for all those people who use abbreviations in their written texts is that there is no guide or regulation that indicates the abbreviation of said word. Everything is left to personal criteria, but you always have to add a glossary with a brief explanation to each abbreviation. However, if the abbreviation is known and widely used today, do not worry that therefore the people who will read your text will understand it.
